Build #4 - .300 Win Mag on a FN-Winchester Model 70, Sporter Weight Hunter

Sawtooth Rifles - Build #4:  .300 Win Mag Sporter Weight Hunter

This rifle was built on short notice, when the owner of #3 said we needed another one to take to Africa.  "We" now included me!   It was basically built as a rebuild of a factory Winchester Extreme Weather that I had bought a couple years ago, that just didn't perform like a rifle owned by a custom rifle maker should.  In fact, compared to how others have reported on the Extreme Weather models, I would say Winchester made a dud.  A 3" group dud.

The factory barrel was replaced with a top end cut rifled barrel from a Brux blank, and results were outstanding.  I will say that the receiver machining looked very nice on this FN made Winchester, and the build was done without any re-machining on the receiver.

Tenon features cut, ready to chamber.

Chambered!

Crown cut, a recessed 11 degree cut.

For the Winchester M70's claw extractor, a groove needs to be milled out of the barrel tenon.  With a quick change-up the Haas TL1 makes a suitable 2 axis horizontal machining center.  For this use, I would argue that it is as solid of a setup as you could ask for.

End mill chucked up in the 5C collet chuck, and the barrel being held in a boring bar holder on the tool post.

Parts ready to assemble.

Ready for Africa.

We may have sneaked in a shooting session while we were out there.
